About

I'm a computer geek who currently works as a sysadmin and tech journalist. I enjoy learning new things, both profesionally (new technologies, software, tools) and privately (new hobbies, reading books). At work I administer Windows and Linux servers, but I also setup and repair Windows PCs and do a whole bunch of various IT related tasks, including tech support / help desk, website administration, etc.

Privately, I've always enjoyed messing around with PCs, I started out by always using older PCs and running Linux on them. I'd double and triple boot various Linux distributions, settling on mainly Debian based ones, though I did run Gentoo for a long time (this was back in the day of the Pentium 2/3 where compiling software packages brought a noticable speed increase). I later used Arch Linux for some time before settling back into Debian/Ubuntu. I also enjoy building PCs for gaming, though I honestly don't have too much time for games.

I am also a geek in the sense that I enjoy going almost obsessively deep into a subject (I still have an Excel spreadsheet from when I was looking for a good backpack for work). So I have different hobbies, but I spend at least a few years in one before slowly finding another. I've enjoyed photography for years, starding out with a borrowed camera and a few books on the subject (I taught myself photoshop from a book, crazy as that sounds these days). I've been mountain biking for over 20 years, I later got into rock climbing and joined an association where I also spent a couple of years helping out with climbing courses. I discovered board games and joined a board game club where we organised meetups, even becoming the president of the club for a couple of years. During this time I also launched a small podcast (together with a friend) where we talked about board games, I was also part-owner of a board game caffee (which sadly closed because of the pandemic).

I follow Formula 1, love reading books (both fiction and non-fiction) and doing things myself (DIY).

I have almost no social media presence, but my primary email address is jforst at Google's well-known email service. Also, click here to check out my CV in PDF format.
